Saint Akakios was Bishop of Amida, Mesopotamia (modern-day Turkey) from 400 to 425, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Theodosius II.
At that time, there were seven thousand Persian prisoners who were captured by the Romans and held in Amida. Filled with the utmost compassion at the sight of these men perishing from hunger and misery, Saint Akakios resolved to help them. The Church historian Socrates records what happened as follows (Eccl. Hist., Bk. 7, Ch. 21):
